Kirkland, WA Community

Get ready to make a meaningful impact on our local environment at the highly anticipated Forest Restoration Day at Carillon Woods Park in Kirkland! This special volunteer event invites community members to roll up their sleeves and contribute to the restoration of one of Kirkland’s natural treasures. Whether you’re an experienced gardener or someone who simply loves the outdoors, this is your chance to connect with nature while helping preserve the beauty and ecological health of our neighborhood park for future generations.

Carillon Woods Park spans eight beautiful acres of conifer forest interwoven with scenic walking trails and featuring a welcoming playground for families. On Forest Restoration Day, volunteers like you will engage in critical habitat restoration activities under the guidance of experienced Green Kirkland Stewards Andrew and John. Together, we’ll transform this beloved community space by removing invasive species, planting native vegetation, and performing essential stewardship tasks to ensure the park thrives for years to come.

Located at 5429 106th Avenue NE, Carillon Woods Park represents a vital green space in our increasingly urbanized environment. The 8-acre neighborhood park serves as a sanctuary for local wildlife and provides residents with a natural retreat from city life. Volunteers will focus on removing non-native plants such as blackberry and ivy that threaten the native ecosystem, while also planting indigenous species during the optimal planting season from October through March. Additional tasks like mulching and weeding help create the conditions necessary for a healthy forest to flourish naturally.

This restoration work carries tremendous significance for our community and ecosystem. By participating, you’re directly contributing to biodiversity conservation, improved water quality, and enhanced habitat for native wildlife. The collective effort of volunteers helps preserve the natural character of Kirkland while ensuring that future generations can enjoy these green spaces. Each hour of volunteer work represents a tangible investment in our shared environment, demonstrating how community action can make a lasting difference in maintaining the ecological balance of our neighborhood parks.

Registration for this rewarding community event is straightforward and helps organizers prepare adequately for all participants. Simply use the “Register on Eventbrite” button on the event page to secure your spot. After registering, you’ll receive a confirmation email from Eventbrite with additional details. If you’re bringing family members, be sure to register each person individually by adding “tickets” to your registration. For large teams or groups, consider reaching out to the organizers to arrange a closed event that accommodates your specific needs.

Proper preparation ensures a safe and enjoyable experience for all volunteers. Closed-toe shoes are absolutely required for your protection, while youth participants must bring a completed Youth Service Agreement form. For maximum comfort, wear clothes that can withstand dirt and thorns—long pants and long sleeves are ideal. Remember to bring a water bottle, snacks, and appropriate weather gear, whether that’s rain protection or sun gear, depending on the forecast. While gardening gloves, tools, and training will be provided, you’re welcome to bring your own gloves if preferred.

The meeting point for volunteers is easily accessible at the park sign and playground located in the northeast corner of Carillon Woods Park, near the intersection of NE 55th St and 106th Ave NE. If you arrive late, you may need to locate the group within the park. Parking is available along nearby streets; however, please be mindful of your neighbors and observe all posted parking regulations. For those looking to reduce their carbon footprint, the organizers encourage carpooling, walking, biking, or using public transportation—KC Metro’s trip planner can help you navigate bus routes to the site.

Safety is a top priority at Forest Restoration Day, with clear protocols in place to ensure everyone’s well-being. Youth participation is welcomed with age-appropriate guidelines: children under 14 must be accompanied by a responsible adult who remains onsite throughout the event, while teens 14-18 can participate either with an adult or independently with proper documentation. The event takes place rain or shine, though cancellations may occur in cases of extreme weather conditions or poor air quality. Since restoration sites are natural areas, volunteers should be aware that stinging insects might be present, particularly from May through October.
